Preparing to meet your child's teacher can be nerve-wracking. It's hard not to feel as though you're being "graded" as a parent. Lifestyle reporter Ylonda Caviness has tips to take the stress out of the parent teacher conference.
How to take the stress out of parent teacher conferences
Many of us view our child's behavior and performance as a direct reflection of our parenting. Therefore, parent teacher conferences aren't always something we look forward to. Ylonda Caviness has great advice to help ease the tension so that a parent teacher conference can be the productive meeting it should be.
Before the conference:
* Don't let your children know you are stressed out.
* Talk to your child before the parent teacher conference about what they might be talking about.
During the conference:
* Show that you're concerned; have some questions ready and have a pad and paper.
* Try to be open and objective about the situation.
* Your body language will say a lot—open your arms, uncross your legs.
* Show the teacher that you are listening and open-minded about their views of your child.
* Ask the teacher what you can do at home to help your child.
* Make sure the teacher knows that you want to follow up. Find out how the teacher likes to be contacted so you can check in to see how your child is progressing.
After the parent teacher conference:
* Send a note to the teacher thanking them for their insights.
* If you have mapped out a strategy to help your child with his studies or to address any other issues discussed in the conference, follow up with your child's teacher to provide updates.
