The way a candle works is that energy from the flame first warms and then melts some of the wax. Liquid wax then flows up the wick via capillary action, providing more fuel for the flame. Because candle burn for as there is still wax, we know that the energy released burning C25H52 must be greater than the energy needed to first heat and then melt the C25H52.. A) Write out and balance the combustion reaction of C25H52 with O2. B) Given that C25H52 has a heat capacity of 2.5 J/gC, a heat of fusion of 225 J/g, and a melting point of 54 degrees celcius, estimate the minimum amount of energy released when a gram of C25H52 is burned. C) Scented candles have additional compounds mixed in with the wax that people can smell at very low concentrations. Linalool, a molecule with the formula C10H18O (MM=154.25 g/mol), smells like lavender, and can be detected whenever concentration is greater than 0.8 ppb (parts per billion). If you are in a room with a volume of 2x10^4 L at a temperature of 25 degrees celcius and a total pressure of 1 atm, how many grams of linalool must be in the air for you to smell a lavender scent? This is a video showing how I make a homemade sweet potato pie. Sweet Potato Pie 1-1 lb sweet potato 1/2 C butter, softened 1 C sugar 1/2 C milk 2 eggs 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1-9" unbaked pie crust Boil sweet potato in skin for 40-50 minutes or until done. Run cold water over the sweet potato and remove the skin. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Break apart sweet potato in a bowl. Add butter and beat until mixed well. Stir in sugar, milk eggs nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla. Beat on medium speed until mixture is smooth. Pour filling into an unbaked pie crust. Bake for 55- 60 minutes or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean. Pie will puff up like a souffle and then will sink back as it cools. Cover crust with foil, remove foil about 10 minutes before pie is done.
